TESOL Certification Program

This program prepares graduate students to become teachers of English as a
Second Language (ESL) and teach English Language Learners in grades Pre-K-12.
Students take courses in linguistics and Pedagogy, design and implement workshops
to raise cross-cultural awareness and gain extensive practical experience in
a variety of educational settings at the university and in the community. These
include pre-schools, elementary, and secondary schools, museums, adult education,
and college programs. This approach provides teacher candidates with the intellectual
rigor of the academic discipline and the professional growth enhanced by immersion
in authentic classroom contexts. When teacher candidates have successfully
completed all the requirements below, they will have in hand a Master’s
Degree with teacher certification.

  • Professional Preparation – 30 credits

    • LIN 524 TESOL Pedagogy: Theory and Practice &
    • LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
    • LIN 529 Content-based Language and Literacy Development &
    • LIN 579 Field Experience N-12
    • LIN 527 Structure of English
    • LIN 571 Curriculum Design and Evaluation &
    • LIN 578 Field Experience in Adult & Tertiary Contexts
    • LIN 574 Managing Instruction, Assessment, and Resources*
    • LIN 581 Supervised Student Teaching grades N-6*
    • LIN 582 Supervised Student Teaching grades 7-12*

    *Prerequisite: GPA of 3.0 or better , permission of department, proof of having
    English Language Proficiency and having passed the Liberal Arts & Science
    Test.

  • Linguistics & Foundations – 15 credits

    • LIN 522 Phonetics
    • LIN 530 Intro to General Linguistics
    • LIN 541 Bilingualism
    • LIN 532 Second Language Acquisition

    And one of the following:

    • LIN 542 Sociolinguistics
    • LIN 525 Contrastive Analysis
    • LIN 526 Analysis of an Uncommonly taught language
    • LIN 555 Error Analysis

    2 Years of language other than English

  • All teacher candidates must complete the following:

    • NCE 600 Identifying & Reporting Child Abuse
    • NCE 601 Identification & Referral of Substance Abuse
    • NCE 602 Prevention & Identification of School Violence
    • NCE 603 Fingerprinting
