Marie Huffman, Ph.D. 1989, University of California, Los Angeles

Much of Marie Huffman's research involves acoustic analysis of speech, with particular emphasis on its temporal structure. One current research focus is the way that linguistic phrasing and prominence affect fine details of speech production planning, such as durations, consonant release, and modes of vocal fold vibration. She is also interested in the linguistic representations of regionally and socially determined pronunciation variations in English. Professor Huffman has been awarded grants from the National Science Foundation for innovation in integrating teaching and research, and is currently co-PI on a multidisciplinary grant funded by the National Science Foundation on adaptive spoken dialogue, a project housed jointly in Linguistics, Psychology and Computer Science.
