Welcome to the
Stony Brook Linguistics Department

The Department of Linguistics at Stony Brook University is a leading center for research and training in all areas of modern linguistics. The department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in theoretical linguistics and TESOL. Research areas represented in the department include phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and first and second language acquisition as well as experimental approaches to these areas. Faculty expertise includes a wide range of languages/language areas such as Austronesian, East Asian, Romance, Semitic, Slavic and signed languages. The intellectual life of the department is diverse and dynamic and is enriched by active interdisciplinary research projects with faculty from other departments.

    The SYNC conference is an annual conference that serves as a platform for linguistics graduate students and faculty from area universities to disseminate research results, exchange ideas, and more broadly, foster a sense of community. This year we are proud to present David Pesetsky as our keynote speaker.
